Former Pupil Mark Stoddart exhibits bronze sculptures and his Frewen College scarf

We had the great honour and pleasure of designer, artist and former pupil of Frewen College Mark Stoddart attending our Prize Giving Day back in July.  He treated us to a moving speech regarding his time spent at Frewen, what inspires his beautiful sculptures and gave us an insight into the inspirational charity work he is involved in across the globe.

Just recently a couple of his sculptures (The Bronze Hippo and the Silver Oxpecker Bird Sculpture) were exhibited in the window of the Powderhall Bronze Editions Art Gallery.

Mark also generously gave additional pieces from his own personal collection which people could buy with 100% of the money donated to the charitable cause of helping to finish the second floor of the Dyslexic school in Kenya.

Mark told us “The school is bursting at the seems and having to turn away kids who are desperate to attend.  Parents are even coming to the school and demanding to be shown around so that they can see for themselves that there is no space.  Nancy, who runs the school, is even housing children in her own house next to the school".

Mark uses his creative talents to raise awareness and support those with Dyslexia around the globe and has been an Ambassador of Dyslexia Scotland for over 11 years.

Most recently Mark tells us that he is “Personally funding another teacher training course for 16 remote schools in Kenya starting on the 15th August. Which will include the travel expenses for teachers, breakfast, lunch, teas, coffee, Hippo biscuits and training materials.  Sharon Hall Dyslexia Scotland’s Teacher Trainer is very kindly helping me.  And I will also be bringing Teacher Training Manuals over from Florida UFLI Manuals”.

I think we can safely say that Mark is definitely an advocate for showcasing that Dyslexia need not stand in the way of anyone's dreams or ambitions.

When children with Dyslexia are provided with the right learning tools and environment, their full potential can be discovered, nurtured and empowered.  Something that we also fervently believe in here at Frewen College.
